MetaTrader 4 (MT4) is a powerful and user-friendly trading platform. This article demonstrates how to use MT4 on your desktop/laptop.
Before installing MT4, locate your trading account login and server details in your Personal Area (PA) using the linked article.
Installing MT4
+For Windows:
- Download MT4 from the Exness website.
- Tap Accept on the welcome message and close the demo account prompt.
- On the Login to an existing account page, search for “Exness Technologies Ltd” in the Find Broker bar.
- Kenyan clients: Enter “Exness (KE) Limited”.
- Select the appropriate trading server, enter your account number and password, and then tap Sign In.
For Mac OS:
- Download MT4 from the Exness website and double-click the file to install it.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Search for “Exness Technologies Ltd” and select the appropriate trading server.
- Kenyan clients: Enter “Exness (KE) Limited”.
- Choose Existing Trade Account, enter your account number and password, then click Finish.
Your trading account will appear under the Accounts tab.
Logging in
+To log in:
- Click File and select Login to Trade Account.
- Enter your trading account’s Login, Password, and Server, then click Login.
- If successful, you will hear a confirmation chime, which means you are now logged into MT4 with your trading account.
To switch accounts:
- While logged in to your trading account, click File and select Login to Trade Account.
- Sign in with your other trading account’s details and click OK. To make switching quicker tick Save account information.
- Once this is done, the saved accounts will be visible in the dropdown menu while logging in.
Adding and removing instruments
+Before you start trading, it is advisable to add your preferred trading instruments to the Market Watch window.
To add:
- Right-click on the Market Watch window.
- Select Symbols and select from the list displayed.
- Click on an instrument to add it to Market Watch and click Close.
To remove:
- Right-click on an instrument in the Market Watch.
- Click Hide.
Opening an order
+Below mentioned are a few different ways to bring up the New Order window:
- Click New Order in the toolbar.
- Press F9 on your keyboard.
- Right-click on the trading instrument in the Market Watch window, then click New Order.
- Double-click the trading instrument in the Market Watch window.
To place an order:
- From the New Order window, select your preferred symbol, transaction size, Stop Loss (SL), and Take Profit (TP) levels.
- The execution type is found under Type and is auto-detected by the instrument chosen and trading account type.
- Click Sell By Market or Buy By Market to place the order. Note that the buttons may vary based on the execution type.
To set up pending orders:
- Open the New Order window (F9).
- From the New Order window, select your preferred symbol and transaction size.
- Under Type choose Pending Order and select the pending order of your choice from the dropdown provided.
- Set up your Price and Expiry date*.
- Optionally, set Stop Loss (SL) and Take Profit (TP) levels.
- Click Place to set up your pending order.
*Expiry dates that fall during a weekend will see the order expire at market close at the end of the current week (excluding cryptocurrency instruments).
Please follow stop levels when setting pending orders (including SL and TP).
Closing an order
+Closing an order can be done in one of the following ways:
- Double-click the order you want to close in the Trade tab (in the Terminal area), then click the Close By Market button.
- Right-click your order in the Trade tab, select Close Order, and confirm it. With One-Click Trading active, the order closes when Close Order is selected.
- Click the X on the right of the order in the Trade tab; this closes the order instantly with One-Click Trading active.

Managing an order
+Here’s how you can modify or delete an existing order from the Trade tab:
- Right-click the order in the Trade tab (in the Terminal area).
- Click Modify or Delete Order.
- To modify: amend the fields available for modification, including Price, Stop Loss, Take Profit, and Expiry date. Click Modify once done.
- To delete: click the Delete option.
