The “Trade is disabled” error may appear in MetaTrader platforms when trading is not permitted for an account or a specific instrument. This article outlines the most common reasons and how to resolve them.
Identify your situation
Before troubleshooting, check which scenario applies:
- All instruments are unavailable → see sections below on account access and verification
- Only specific instruments are unavailable → see instrument-related sections
- Buy/Sell buttons are greyed out → check sections about account access and permissions
- Error appears in the Journal tab → review all sections below
Account-related causes
1. Logged in with a read-only (investor) password
If you are logged in with a read-only password, trading is not permitted.
To resolve:
- Log in again using your trading password (not the investor password)
2. Account not fully activated
Trading may be restricted if the account setup is incomplete.
Check the following:
- Account verification status
- Whether the first minimum deposit has been completed (if required)
To resolve:
- Complete verification in your Personal Area
- Make the required deposit if prompted
Instrument-related causes
1. Incorrect instrument suffix
Some account types require trading instruments with specific suffixes.
For example:
- Standard accounts: EURUSD
- Standard Cent accounts: EURUSDc
To resolve:
- Open Market Watch
- Select the correct instrument for your account type
2. Instrument is in close-only mode
When an instrument is set to close-only, new trades cannot be opened.
Check the following:
- Right-click the instrument in Market Watch
- Select Specification
- Review the trading mode
To resolve:
- Wait until full trading is enabled
- Or select another instrument
3. Instrument trading is disabled
In some cases, trading may be disabled for a specific instrument.
Check the following:
- Right-click the instrument
- Select Specification
- Look for Trade: Disabled
To resolve:
- Trade a different instrument
- Try again later
Platform behavior
MetaTrader platforms may display this restriction differently:
- MT4: The New Order button may remain active
- MT5: The New Order button may be greyed out
This is expected platform behavior.
This error does not indicate that your account is blocked. It is typically caused by account permissions or instrument-specific restrictions and can usually be resolved by following the steps above.
